Rosemary Matthews is a contemporary painter based in Brooklyn, New York. She graduated from the University of Florida in 2023 with a B.F.A. in painting and a certificate in graphic design. Her paintings are the result of a lifelong pursuit of learning how to invoke a deep, sudden, intangible feeling, such as the way the air feels before it rains or the fleeting memories after waking up from a dream. Many of her paintings begin as photographs that she takes daily, as part of an ongoing compulsion to immortalize the ephemeral beauty of her surroundings. As she paints, these images become abstracted by memory, transformed into mythological ruminations on the overlap of what is real and what we project upon the real. Growing up in Florida deeply influenced her painting practice and led her to develop a reverence for the swampy, temperamental, and rapidly changing Florida landscape. There is a palpable sense of wonder and awe in her work that bubbles with an underlying fluorescent paranoia, aligning with her own subconscious feeling of dread as she witnessed the ocean creep ever closer to her childhood home year after year.
